Visited today the presentation of Maaike Holvast’s “New York Style Stories” @ Mediamatic. Along side the nice 5 films portraing different New York characters, there where also lovely still portraits of the characters hanging there shot by my buddy Stephen Elledge.

Go watch the films online (and soon the photos) @ limboland.

This Summer and Fall I have been filming 6 different New Yorkers for my web-series, New York Style Stories which has been programmed at Limboland.tv The 5th Episode of the series is up this weekend and the 6th one is programmed for Sunday the 19th.

Besides the movie portraits, photographer Stephen Elledge has also taken great still portraits of all 6 characters.

Maria (van Heijningen) Heidemann AKA Silver_Cat is a wonderfully creative Set-designer. She’s also an über fun girl to hang out with and obviously very photogenic.
If all photo shoots were as easy and fun as this one was! These are some of the “outtakes”.

Holland vs Spain 2010

Yesterday, as you probably know, was the Worldcup final between Holland and Spain. A very important game for Holland and the first WK final since 32 years! Museumplein (Museum Square) is the central place in Amsterdam if you want to watch the game in the outdoors among oh couple of thousands of football supporters. A bit intimidating for me, but I went to check it out and this is my impression of the day.
Quite a lot of photos for this rather “tight edit”, so enjoy.

Edit:
All images from this Story can now be viewed here.

Fusco’s “Funeral Train” first time in Amsterdam

1968 © Paul Fusco / Magnum

I’ve blogged about this compelling series some time ago, but since it’s the first time in The Netherlands that we are able to admire the prints on the wall, it’s certainly worth mentioning it again.

For “Funeral Train”, Paul Fusco of Magnum photo agency, traveled in June 8th 1968 on a special train from New York to Washington. On that train was the body of Robert F Kennedy, the Presidential candidate and the 2nd son to the Kennedy’s, who was shot 3 days earlier in Los Angeles. Fusco portrayed the thousands of mourners who gathered along the tracks to wave goodbye to their assassinated Presidential candidate.

These photos by Fusco remained hidden to the public in the US for a long time,

The Lab set by Maria Heidemann. © Angus R Shamal

It was great fun yesterday during “PLAY” – an event arranged by Foam_Lab @ Foam. The public was encouraged to interact and participate in the different activities taking place through the building. From firing paint-balls at the wall to curating their own artwork on the walls of the museum or even following a masterclass runway photography (the public were the models). I joined the masterclass, but more about it soon.

I’m almost positive all of you who already watched Zombieland know all this to be true. I gave it another watch this weekend and realized yet again just how brilliant the opening title sequence really is! Being a zombie comedy flick, the opening sequence is as gruesome as it is hilarious, showing people being hunted by blood-crazed zombies. Each mini-scenario is carefully constructed

Not your typical Band shoot

PHOTO-SESSIONS

For awhile now we were discussing the possibility of a cool shoot for the Amsterdam based Mod-Jazz band, West Hell 5. Finally, last December we decided to go for it! Not the ideal time to have a fun band shoot on location, in the middle of a hard freezing winter in Amsterdam! But, a great opportunity for a location came up; a Coal transport and storage bulk terminal called OBA, located at the western docs not far from Amsterdam. So we picked a day a week before Christmas, cleared the permissions to shoot there and now were hoping for some snow/rain-free hours. It seemed we were in luck for not only a dry day, but sunny as well! Freezing -15°c non the less.
