4,6000.00 Hours, London 2004 © Alastair Thain

I always find myself fascinated by artists that make their own gear to fit their work-flow and achieve the compelling results they do. Alastair Thain is such a photographer. As an idea partly inspired by the US military, that used large format cameras equipped with powerful airborne flashes to photograph the Vietnam jungle at night, so does Alastair build his own custom made camera constructions to photograph his scenes.

It’s not often that I find myself “transported” into someone else’s world, which is odd since it’s my favorite recreational activity! The World of Lori Nix is full of fascination and curious stories, told with a whimsy sense of humor and a lot of patience. Dealing with themes such as the apocalypse, danger and disaster,

1968 © Paul Fusco / Magnum

I’ve blogged about this compelling series some time ago, but since it’s the first time in The Netherlands that we are able to admire the prints on the wall, it’s certainly worth mentioning it again.

For “Funeral Train”, Paul Fusco of Magnum photo agency, traveled in June 8th 1968 on a special train from New York to Washington. On that train was the body of Robert F Kennedy, the Presidential candidate and the 2nd son to the Kennedy’s, who was shot 3 days earlier in Los Angeles. Fusco portrayed the thousands of mourners who gathered along the tracks to wave goodbye to their assassinated Presidential candidate.

These photos by Fusco remained hidden to the public in the US for a long time,

Edith Maybin‘s work is mesmerizing as it is subversive. Staged Role plays, costumes and image manipulation take part in making the final images, as a “study of the mother/daughter bond“.

Her work can be seen as part of the exhibition “Au feminin” (Women Photographing Women), in the Gulbenkian Cultural Centre in Paris, till September 29th.

These are some favorites of mine from Edith’s work:

© Massimo Vitali. Catania Under the Volcano #2806. 2007

The Italian photographer Massimo Vitali (1944, Como) is famous for his monumental photographs of large groups of people. These focus especially on contemporary leisure time activities: the beach, the disco, mass tourism. Typical of his work is the congregation of a large, impersonal group, in which details and individual stories can nevertheless be identified. Vitali’s photos are the result of a complex work process. He usually uses a classic wooden Deardorff 11-x-14-inch camera to record everything with the greatest of precision and from an elevated vantage point. The images are then digitally enlarged to form impressive panoramas. The results are images with an extremely wide visual field and at the same time a high degree of detail.

The exhibition in Foam comprises Vitali’s new work, complemented by an overview of existing work.
