Manifest against Nuclear Energy
Amsterdam, the Dam — 16 April 2011. The City participated in the national protest/manifestation against Nuclear Energy. Many Amsterdam residents and people from neighbor cities gathered at the central Dam square to join the word and shout to the Government to stop the plans for new Nuclear Energy Plants. This was hardly the type of event we use to know from 15-20 years ago were images of people protesting in the streets and violent rallies breaking loose between the Police and the demonstrators, were marked in everyone’s memory. No, this was a much different affair — well organized, secure and tame atmosphere with spokesmen from different political parties and organizations giving their dosage of information on the central podium for the manifest portion of the afternoon — later followed by live music. The crowed seemed entertained and in good spirit covered with stickers and holding balloons.
No, this wasn’t the manifestation I had in mind. The 80’s were long gone and those people have families with grand children now.
However the issue remains that Nuclear Energy doesn’t fit the Green future many have in mind, and new Nuclear Plants are a big NoNo! So any attention to the problem and action taken against it is necessary and welcome.
